Welcome to The Nelson Touch blog! This is the official blog of Nelson Touch Consulting, the human capital management consulting company that I founded in 2008.
The blog will provide insights, discussions and resources related to human capital strategy, incentive design, performance management and analytics. These are the areas that NTC specializes in (I’ve left off HR technology for now since I think that area is already adequately covered in the blogosphere).
I chose the name “Nelson Touch” due to my long-standing interest in nautical history and the Napoleonic era in particular(culminating in Admiral Nelson’s victory over the combined French and Spanish fleets at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805). As such, I should warn you that there may be occasional posts on nautical history and perhaps even sailing, a related passion. I promise, however, to make a reasonable connection back to human capital strategy, etc.
What is “The Nelson Touch”? It refers to a number of Nelson’s attributes, including his ability to inspire his men and bring out the best in people; his reliance on close study of the fundamentals of a situation to gain tactical advantage; his thinking outside the norm of eighteenth century sea warfare; and his penchant for bold strategies based on giving trusted commanders both a simple battle plan and the independence to execute it.
I thought it was an apt metaphor for the unique approach that we have adopted at NTC. We emphasize strategy as a vital foundation for planning and action, we are not constrained by the prevailing fashions or conventional wisdom or tools; we start from first principles to construct optimal and robust solutions, and we believe that a firm’s leadership, culture, HR capability and technology are critical enablers of talent management.
I hope you will enjoy our posts. I invite you to actively engage in the dialog and share ideas and resources with the whole crew.
